Paul Paffett will be competing in the epic Singapore Marathon in Rich’s honor, raising much needed funds for our family.
Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues, I know I have mentioned to a few of you about this, but I wanted to be sure I had a place in the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2013, (that will take place on the 1st of December 2013), before I started the fund raising. You may well be asking why is he considering running a marathon at this time of his life? Well it was something I always wanted to do when I was younger and thought the opportunity had passed. But the story of Rich and what he has, is and will be going through, gave me the inspiration to dust off the runners and have a go. I have known Rich Holland for a few years, since he and a couple of other lads were living with my son Chris (aka ‘Big Jim’) together in Dubai. A great lad and a dedicated triathlete, who has participated at world championship level. Always out on his bike or for a run. In the early hours of the morning on Thursday 11th October, 2012, Rich set out on his bike to make a short journey to the start of the new cycling track in Dubai. What was supposed to be a regular training ride, turned out to be anything but that. Despite adhering to cycling safety rules and having both a helmet and reflective bands, Rich was hit from behind by a car, sustaining multiple life-threatening injuries. These included: broken ribs, punctured lungs, a fractured sternum, fractured right fibula, and severe injuries to his brain. His brain injuries are substantial, the worst of which is a contusion on his brain stem which caused an immediate coma. He has what is known as a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Rich was rushed by ambulance to the Trauma Unit at the local hospital, where he underwent lifesaving surgery to relieve the swelling on his brain. After 3 weeks, Rich was transferred to a private clinic in Dubai where he remained in ICU. Being tube fed, he lost more than 15 kilos, and his muscle mass deteriorated quickly. In January this year, Rich was repatriated to Cape Town where he now resides. Rich’s condition is unchanged. He still requires expensive intensive medical supervision as he is unable to move or communicate at all. Rich is on a comprehensive neuro rehabilitation programme at an outpatient facility in Cape Town and is cared for by his mother and 2 carers. Knowing Rich, every day will be a fight to get that little bit better. We all have or know kids that are precious to us. And despite them growing up, they will always be kids in our eyes. By fundraising, I hope to help ‘one kid’ who has had his life interrupted with a tragic accident. That’s why I have decided to RUN FOR RICH. At this stage I am asking for ‘PROMISES’ of sponsorship which will not be due until the run is complete (in early December – giving you time to save up!). I will write to all those who have made a ‘promise’ following completion of the marathon and give you details of where promises can be converted to payments. Please give generously Paul Paffett”
The remarkable Renée Fourie @renekie has created a challenge called Tri-a-day challenge leading up to the 1 year since Rich’s accident called #1110Challenge. She writes “‘The nature of triathlons focuses on persistence’. This replicates the everyday care & love for Rich’s recovery with the determination and faith at heart to get Rich Back on his Bike.I’m sure during these months some days will be harder than others but I will not give up because every little bit I can do and give counts towards creating awareness in the support to raise money for Rich and his family.”
She has just started the tri-a-day on 10th June and finishes on Friday, 11th October with the hectic 1110Challenge of 1000m swim, 100km bike ride and a 10k run. She hopes to have raised £1110.00 for Rich by that date. To read her story, please click below. It’s a massive challenge and Rich is proud of you. Renée you are so wonderful and inspiring to do this for Rich. We are touched. The support for Back on Your Bike. Donate for Rich Holland is phenomenal. Thank you xoxoxo
