Fighting Chance Dubai, 24 May held at Dubai Sports City, pits some of South Africa’s most renowned international rugby personalities into the boxing ring for an amateur black-tie fight night between hemispheres – North vs South, in the name of tragically injured South African triathlete Richard Holland (Backonyourbike.com).
South African rugby legends Bolla Conradie and Conrad Jantjes will be getting in the ring in an effort to raise awareness and funds for BackOnYourBike (backonyourbike.com) a fund for injured South African triathlete and IronMan Richard Holland who remains in a “locked-in” state seven months after being hit by a car in Dubai in October 2012. Holland, 30, was training for an Ironman event when he was struck by a car in Dubai and sustained multiple life threatening injuries the worst a severe brain stem injury, which has left him unable to move or communicate. Holland is being treated at the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre in Mitchells Plain. Notes to the editor: What is BackOnYourBike?
Back On Your Bike is a fundraising effort for Richard Holland who was injured in a cycling accident (whilst training in Dubai) on 11 October 2012. Whilst training for an Ironman Race, avid cyclist and triathlete Rich was hit from behind by a car and sustained multiple life-threatening injuries; both lungs were punctured, ribs were broken, right leg broken, sternum fractured and internal bleeding but the worst was a severe injury to his brain stem. Richard requires intensive, 24 hour medical supervision to care for him round the clock, including tube feeding through a PEG tube into his stomach, regular turning to prevent pressure sores, intensive physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy.
Due to the nature of his injury, and the potential need for lifetime care, an independent trust BackOnYourBike has been set up, controlled by RMB Private Bank, to help his family raise funds for his recovery, neuro-rehabilitation and funds to support Rich for the rest of his life. Back On Your Bike’s goal (www.backonyourbike.com) is to raise awareness for Rich, Cycle Safety and funds to cover his mounting medical expenses and rehabilitation for the future. As Rich has been living in Dubai for the last few years, he had no medical aid cover in South Africa. This means that all his medical costs, rehabilitation and treatment have to be privately funded. This is where donations, fundraising and support from the public have helped. Over R1 Million has already been raised for Rich!
